Students who live within the home zone are legally entitled to enrol. Proof of usual residence will be required.

ESOL Students

All ESOL students are required to attend an enrolment interview before starting at our kura. This ensures we can provide the appropriate support for a successful transition into learning.

Enrolment Process

Our enrolment policy and processes align with the Education and Training Act 2020. We use the Ministry of Education’s ENROL system to register and manage student enrolments.

As part of the enrolment process:

  • Eligibility to enrol will be checked.

  • Required documentation will be verified and securely stored.

  • Evidence of enrolment eligibility is retained as required by the Ministry of Education and ERO.

Once enrolment is approved, we will:

  • Arrange class placement

  • Provide orientation and transition support

  • Identify and arrange any additional learning support or funding if needed

Class Placement

Class placement decisions are made carefully, taking into consideration:

  • Age

  • Information shared by parents/caregivers and whānau

  • Social and learning needs

  • Class composition and available spaces

The Principal has final approval of all class placements. Reclassification between year levels may occur occasionally. Parents/Caregivers are welcome to make an appointment to discuss placement decisions if needed.

Continuous Enrolment for New Entrants

Whitiora School operates a continuous enrolment policy for new entrants. Children may start school on or after their fifth birthday at any time during the year.

Out-of-Zone Applications & Ballots

After all in-zone applications have been accepted, places may be available for out-of-zone students. If required, a ballot will be held in accordance with the Education and Training Act 2020.

  • All applicants will be notified of the outcome.

  • Ballot results are communicated within three days.

  • Unsuccessful applicants are placed on a waiting list in ballot order.

Annulment of Enrolment

The Board reserves the right to withdraw or annul an enrolment if false information is provided. In such cases, parents/caregivers will be informed and given the opportunity to meet with the Board before a final decision is made.
